Did you know that the red carpet walked on by the music celebrities who trooped to the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards at Staples Center, Los Angeles was made of recycled plastic water bottles?

The same red carpet has in fact been reused by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States for a few years now. As the academy observes its 50 years of existence, it has committed to green up its golden year celebrations.

The life of a musician is known for its excesses. But the abuse stars do to their bodies doesn’t even compare to the toll that recording, releasing and performing music takes on the environment: Just one stadium show might produce as much as 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide. The good news is that increasingly artists are attempting to take responsibility and move toward greener alternatives, either by cutting back on their use of harmful products like fuel and plastic or by devoting time and money to promoting environmental causes. Here’s a look at 15 artists on the forefront of a still-growing movement.

Although this effort has been around for a couple of years, just discovered it today. From the web site:

The Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) is an industry-wide initiative that educates, motivates, and inspires the theater community and its patrons to adopt environmentally friendlier practices in theater production and everyday life.

The BGA (formerly Broadway Goes Green) was launched in 2008 as an ad hoc committee of The Broadway League. The BGA brings together all segments of the theatre community, including producers, theatres in New York and around the country, theatrical unions and their members, and related businesses. Working closely with the Natural Resources Defense Council, the BGA identifies and disseminates better practices for theatre professionals and reaches out to theatre fans throughout the country.

The site includes resources for theater professionals and theater fans. The Theater Professionals section of the site is divided into Pre/Post Production; Production; Outreach; Touring; and Venues.
