USGS Data Sharing/Data Management Policy

The USGS National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center has released an updated data sharing policy intended “to ensure and facilitate full and open access to scientific data and data products.”

The policy outlines researcher obligations to share data, including the extraction of data from proprietary formats, and the submission of both data and FGDC metadata.  The policy also requires that data used for publication “be cited and referenced in publications and other media using a bibliographic reference similar to that used for journal articles.”

A Proposal Data Management Plan (PDMP) is required with all proposals to NCCWSC or any of the DOI Climate Science Centers (CSCs).  For funded projects, PIs must develop a Research Data Management Plan (RDMP), which documents data handling throughout the life of the project, and which “should be reviewed and enhanced as the project evolves.”   Guidance and a detailed data management plan template are available to assist researchers preparing proposals.

For more information, see NCCWSC’s data policies page.
