Thank you to Merinda Hensley for a very useful session on building a great poster. If you were unable to attend the session, the webinar of the workshop is archived at https://www4.gotomeeting.com/register/330257351.

Merinda has developed a LibGuide to support this workshop. You can find it at http://uiuc.libguides.com/researchposter.

One resource that may be helpful for those designing posters is a web-based color palette generator, which can help you select colors that go together. Many of these generators will build schemes from uploaded images. The article “19 Color Palette Generators to Help You Design Like A Pro” provides a good overview of what’s available.

This workshop is part of the University Library’s Savvy Researcher series. For a complete list of upcoming workshops, visit http://illinois.edu/calendar/list/4068. The Savvy Researcher team has also developed a series of LibGuides that complement the content of their workshops.

Here’s a brief guide to how the University Library notifies you about soon-to-be-due and overdue books.

Reminders that a book will be due soon are e-mailed for items checked out from the Undergraduate Library and I-Share Libraries (more than likely because in both cases the loan periods are significantly shorter than they are for books from other campus libraries).

First overdue notices are e-mailed seven days after the due date. Second overdue notices are issued on the 21st day following the due date.

Items still overdue after a set period (40 days for most items) are assumed lost. The borrower will be billed the average replacement cost for books in the subject area, usually a minimum of $125.00 for books and a minimum of $300.00 for bound periodicals. The Library may assess a higher replacement cost in special instances.

A processing fee is assessed once an item is considered by the Library to be lost. Graduate students are assessed this fee, although faculty and staff are not.

The replacement amount is usually credited if the overdue item is returned; however, the processing fee will not be refunded. If the item has been damaged, has already been replaced by the library, or if the item was billed more than two years ago, the replacement amount may be refunded only in part or not at all.

You can check the status of your books AND renew them online at any time by accessing your account in the Library catalog (I recommend Vu-Find) at http://vufind.carli.illinois.edu/vf-uiu/.

The renewal limit for most UIUC Library books is ten (for faculty, staff, and graduate students, that means you can have the book for 160 weeks), unless another user needs the item. After that, you need to return the item to the Library. You can have the book discharged, then charged back out to you if you still need it.

The renewal limit for most items from other I-Share libraries is three. When you have reached the limit, the book must be returned to the lending library. Once it’s back on the shelf, you can request it again.

Primo, the University Library’s new “web scale discovery” tool is now live in beta mode on the University Library gateway. Web scale discovery services are “capable of searching quickly and seamlessly across a vast range of local and remote preharvested and indexed content, providing relevancy-ranked results in an intuitive interface expected by today’s information seekers. ” (Vaughan, 2010)

Primo searches the Online Catalog plus many of our online article databases and digital collections simultaneously. The default search is “everything” in the Primo index. The list of sources Primo searches is available here, and it includes many sources of interest to Institute researchers (e.g., Web of Science, GeoRef, BioOne), but currently excludes some important sources (e.g., Scopus, Biological Abstracts). Thus, “everything” doesn’t mean everything that is available at the University of Illinois, although new resources are being added by the implementation team on an ongoing basis.

For users, Primo differs from Easy Search in that results from all sources are integrated into one, relevance-ranked result set. These search results can then be filtered by document type, location, subjects, authors, and publication dates.

Wondering why you would want to use Primo? Although one of the primary target audiences of Primo is undergraduate students seeking a simple interface to locate library resources, Primo can be a timesaver for all information seekers. Read more about recommended uses of Primo.

What does Primo search?

The University Library is a partner with Ex Libris in the ongoing development of Primo, so your feedback is valuable to us. If you have a comment, or would like to learn more about Primo and how to use it, please contact your librarian.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a way for content publishers to make news, blogs, and other content available to subscribers. For a more detailed explanation of RSS and how it works, check out RSS Made Simple from Common Craft.

You can discover new RSS feeds in several ways. On Web sites that offer this feature, you might see the , or, . In most common Web browsers, when you click these buttons, you can subscribe to the associated feed. You can also enter a feed’s web address (URL) directly into your reader’s Subscribe area. Most literature databases allow you to subscribe to topical or table of contents alerts via RSS.

RSS feeds can be read using software called a feed reader, which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. Google Reader is a good web-based reader with excellent Help files. You can also subscribe to RSS feeds using Outlook.

If you’d rather receive updates via e-mail, BlogTrottr is a free service that sends RSS feeds as regularly scheduled messages.

For more information, see also the University Library’s excellent Current Awareness LibGuide for assistance with using RSS feeds to keep you up to date.

Our online resources make it easier than ever to keep up with new research developments in your area of interest. You can save searches and set up email alerts or RSS feeds from specific publisher sites, literature databases, and web search engines. Table of contents alerts from individual journals and topical searches across entire literature databases (or multiple databases) are possible. Many journals publish post-review preprints of accepted articles far in advance of the print issues, so you can be alerted as soon as items are posted. This post gives some basic instructions for setting up topical search alerts for commonly used databases and search engines (Engineering Village, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science). In many cases, registration with the vendor is required, although you can create RSS feeds in Engineering Village and Scopus without registering, and Google Scholar does not require a Google account for an email alert. For help setting up email or RSS alerts in these or other resources, contact your librarian.

Engineering Village

For an email alert, registration is required, but not for an RSS feed. To create an alert perform your search, then click either “Create alert” for an email alert, or “RSS feed” for RSS. Engineering Village searches many sources simultaneously: INSPEC, Compendex, the National Technical Information Service (NTIS, government reports), US and European patents, GEOBASE, and GeoRef (the latter covering literature in ecology, the environment, and archaeology as well as geology). You can subscribe to an RSS feed using one of the options offered in the Engineering Village interface or your favorite feed reader. To add the feed to your Outlook account, copy the feed URL from the popup window in Engineering Village, then in Outlook right click on “RSS feeds” (below your mail account), select “add a new RSS feed,” and paste the URL into the box.

Google Scholar
You do not need a Google account to create an email alert in Google Scholar. To create an alert, perform your search, then click “Create alert” on the left side of the screen. You can enter any email address into the alert form; Google will send a verification link to that address which you must click to begin receiving alert emails. You can receive up to 20 results per email, and results are emailed as items are indexed in Google Scholar. Only email alerts are offered, not RSS feeds. Each email includes an “Cancel alert” link. Google Scholar indexes new journal literature from many diverse sources very rapidly and captures grey literature which many traditional databases exclude. More information about Google Scholar alerts is here.

Another way to stay current using Google Scholar is “My Updates.” If you create an account and add your own publications to your “My Citations” profile, you can not only monitor your citation metrics, the “My Updates” link will retrieve publications that are similar to your own publications. Click here to learn how to set up your Google Citations profile.

Scopus
For an email alert, registration is required, but not for an RSS feed. To create an alert, perform a search, then select either “Set alert” for an email alert or “Set feed” to create an RSS feed from the search. You can subscribe to the RSS feed using one of the options offered in the Scopus interface or your favorite feed reader. To add the feed to your Outlook account, copy the feed URL from Scopus, then in Outlook right click on “RSS feeds” (below your mail account), select “add a new RSS feed,” and paste the URL into the box.

Web of Science
You’ll need to register with Web of Knowlege to save searches and create alerts. Your registration will also work for Biological Abstracts, CAB Abstracts, and Zoological Record, and the alert instructions are the same. To create an alert, perform a search, then use the “Create Alert/RSS” button to create an alert from the search. Note that it is not currently possible to save searches for Web of Knowledge “all database” searches; alerts must be set up in each database separately.
